Sub irrigated planter

What is a Sub Irrigated Planter? Sub-irrigated planters (SIPs) have been a game changer for us since we started using them almost 10 years ago. The main difference between them and traditional container gardening planters is that with SIPs water is introduced from the bottom and is absorbed up through the growing media via capillary action.

The sub- irrgated planter works when you pour water into the fill tube and it flows down into a chamber of pipes below the soil. Once the chamber is full, the water wicks up through the soil and seeps into plants' roots. This system helps to keep soil consistently moist so you won't have to water as often. Important things to note:

Sub-irrigated planter ( SIP) is a generic name for a special type of planting box used in container gardening and commercial landscaping. A SIP is any method of watering plants where the water is introduced from the bottom, allowing the water to soak upwards to the plant through capillary action.

Sub-irrigated planters supply plants with consistent moisture, so they are healthier without requiring you to keep a detailed watering schedule. You practically get livelier and greener plants that bear more fruits and produce more blooms without doing too much. What do you need to keep in mind about these planters?

Fill the entire bottom of the planter with the potting mix. Make sure to fill all the nooks and crannies around the pipes. Make sure to distance the perforated pipes evenly while doing so. Tip: cover the fill tube with some plastic so you won't get any soil in the tubes. Once complete, cover the soil with a sheet of the landscape fabric.

Sub-irrigated planters (SIPs) are planting containers designed so that irrigation is provided by a sub-surface water chamber, wherein water wicks up to the plant's roots via capillary action (wicking) rather than being irrigated from the surface.

Since Sub-Irrigated Planters allow one to plant a garden immediately (the same day), it is possible to have fresh foods much sooner in an area that could take months or years to recover. An area that has been polluted with a host of pesticides and herbicides, or other chemicals that are contaminating the soils are great places for SIPs.

How Does A Sub-Irrigation Planter Work? When planting and growing using SIP, you will almost never need to top-water the plants. Just fill the basin (aka water reservoir or sub-irrigation system) with clean water whenever the water level drops. The water is transported and diffused as needed throughout the plant's growing medium.

With a sub-irrigated raised bed you get all the advantages of a raised bed plus more produce, better water and fertilizer usage, and an almost plant-and-forget convenience. Total cost was about $225. Potting mix being the most expensive component.

Gardening with sub-irrigation is the process of watering plants from below the soil line. Through capillary action, the water then slowly rises upwards. For the process to work, the soil (potting mix) cannot be too dense or compact. It must contain air spaces that the water molecules can cling to as they rise.

Build a planter. Ours is cedar. Line the planter. We used a pond liner to prevent the wood from rotting. Lay four-inch perforated drain pipes next to each other in the bottom of the container. They should be flush with the ends of the container. Use perforated pipe that's covered with a fabric sleeve.

The main advantage of a sub irrigated planter is that the bottom of the planter holds a large reservoir of nutrient-rich water, decreasing the amount of times you need to water the planter. The 16″ x 16″ x 8′ planter I built below holds 20 gallons of water in the bottom 3.75″ of the reservoir!

Fertilizing a sub-irrigated planter. If you're growing plants in a sub-irrigated planter (or SIP), you've likely already been pointed out towards a wicking soilless mix as opposed to using potting soil. The downside to using a mix like this is that there's little to no nutritional value inherent for plants to use.
