"Stoneman Military Trail" in the Black Mountain of Cave Creek The Stoneman Road, an important supply road between Fort McDowell and Fort Whipple in Prescott between 1870 and 1890. It was an important conduit for the shipping of supplies from Fort Whipple in Prescott to Fort McDowell on what is today the Yavapai Reservation near Fountain Hills.

The Stoneman Road was an important 19th-century supply route between the Union Army's Fort Whipple in Prescott and Fort McDowell on what is today the Yavapai Reservation near Fountain Hills.

The trail follows a wash through the sonoran desert which is now known as the Stoneman Wash. The trail cut travel time to one and a half days. The desert has reclaimed most of the trail although a few sections have been identified by archeologists. The trail served as a military supply trail from 1870 to 1871.

From 1870 to 1890, the Stoneman Road was an important conduit for the shipping of supplies from Fort Whipple in Prescott to Fort McDowell on what is today the Yavapai Reservation near Fountain Hills. The route, of which only minimal traces remain, was named after 48‑year old Colonel George Stoneman.

The Stoneman Military Road is an important part of Arizona history. I've done a blog and column in the Scottsdale Republic about the road within the last year, so you may have at least some remembrance of this important lifeline that ran between Fort McDowell near Fountain Hills and Fort Whipple in Prescott during the era of 1870 until 1890.

Runners will access the Granite trail after a short distance. At approximately mile 3, the course makes a clockwise loop using the Stoneman Wash and Bluff trails. Be sure to watch for the park's brown trail marker signs. We will place a few additional markings on the trail at key intersections.
