Reaction Motors XLR99

The Reaction Motors LR99 engine was the first large, throttleable, restartable liquid-propellant rocket engine. Development began in the 1950s by the Reaction Motors Division of Thiokol Chemical Company to power the North American X-15 hypersonic research aircraft. It could deliver up to 57,000 lbf (250 kN) of thrust with a specific impulse of 279 s (2.74 km/s) or 239 s (2.34 km/s) at sea level.

Reaction Motors XLR99 Rocket. The XLR99 powered the record-breaking X-15 on its fastest flights at nearly seven times the speed of sound. It was the first large, throttleable, restartable liquid propellant rocket engine to be used in a piloted vehicle. The engine was used only in the X-15 program, which rocketed humans to the edge of space.

The engine contractor was Reaction Motors Division of Thiokol Chemical Corporation (RMD). The development program began February 1956. Early component tests proved the XLR30 rocket engine to be inadequate as a starting point; therefore, a completely new design was initiated and designated the XLR99-RM-1 rocket engine.

The Reaction Motors XLR99-RM-1 rocket engine was throttleable by the pilot from 28,500 to 60,000 pounds of thrust (126.77-266.89 kilonewtons). The engine was rated at 50,000 pounds of thrust (222.41 kilonewtons) at Sea Level; 57,000 pounds (253.55 kilonewtons) at 45,000 feet (13,716 meters), the typical drop altitude; and 57,850 pounds (257 ...

Reaction Motors (Thiokol) XLR99: "There's never been anything like it.". "Designed for a manned-system, the 50,000 pounds of thrust in its single chamber has to be controllable at the pilot's discretion: he has to be able to throttle this engine in flight.". Harry Cook, Program Manager for the X-15 's engine.
